Commemorating this year’s Menstrual Hygiene Day, SoWA visited the Nkwantanang MA 5 Basic School in the Adentan Municipality to educate and support girls cultivate actions towards hygienic menstruation.

The day which is celebrated on the 28th of May every year has been selected globally to acknowledge the 28 days average length of a menstrual cycle. The theme for this year is ‘Making Menstrual Hygiene a Normal Fact of Life by 2030’.

Though focused on girls, both sex have been advised not to stigmatize their colleagues in that phase of life. SoWA used the opportunity to distribute sanitary pads to the female students.

Addressing the media, Lead Advocate of Social Watch Africa, Kojo Asiamah Addo, added to calls on the Ghanaian government to scrap taxes on menstrual products or possibly make sanitary pads free and available for primary schools in the country.

Meanwhile, the Head Teacher of the school, Mad. Christiana Nanbu Ngala advised parents to prioritize the menstrual hygiene of their wards.
